Plans Within Plans [LP] $12.98 Joining the pantheon of similar-minded, enduring bands like Bad Religion, Green Day, and NOFX, pop-punk trio MxPx mark their 20th anniversary with the energized Plans Within Plans. The lineup of Bremerton, Washington fellas — singer/bassist Mike Herrera, guitarist Tom Wisniewski, and drummer Yuri Ruley — hold steady and pick up where their last studio album, Secret Weapon, left off. And though it’s been five years since that record’s release, the sound is as seamless as a couple of long separated friends recently reunited. But of course a lot can still change in five years, so in contrast to Secret Weapon, Plans Within Plans finds the trio growing past the girl trouble/post-college era angst/scene-reporting inspiration pool, instead addressing the plight of the working stiff with the bass grooving “The Times,” searching for inspiration on the anthemic, minor chord-driven “Nothing’s Gonna Change,” and of course looking back at those earlier years but remaining hopeful about the future in “Best of Times,” a reflective midtempo rocker that would make good mixtape company alongside the Maine’s “Like We Did (Windows Down)” from 2011. Engineered by Herrera and mixed and mastered by Descendents guitarist Stephen Egerton (who also lent his musical chops to “Far Away” and “In the Past”), Plans Within Plans moves from MxPx’s straight-ahead punk roots (the fiery first single “Far Away” is probably the best pick for longtime fans) to thrashy skatepunk (“Inside Out”) and poppier moments (empowering opener “Aces Up”), joining together lyrics that show the band at their most mature — look no further than the final lines of “Best of Times”: “‘Cause we’re growing up and all that it takes/Is looking forward to better days.” Ultimately, Plans Within Plans manages to stay true to MxPx’s scruffy roots while gracefully transitioning into a new age bracket, especially relatable for fans who’ve been along for the ride with them for years. ~ Chrysta Cherrie |

The disc’s highlight, however, may be “Someday You Will Be Loved,” which is the kind of simple, irony-free love ballad that stands as a great song with or without production tricks. All the while, Gibbard’s artful, introspective lyrics consistently excite the ear with quirky turns of phrase and descriptive imagery. Find the Torch Burn, the Plans: Live at the… $37.99 Full title: Find the Torch Burn, the Plans: Live at the Royal Albert Hall.Always treated with the utmost of respect by his peers and younger Brit-pop upstarts, Paul Weller’s Modfather reputation has been further bolstered by a shower of accolades including an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, a Godlike Genius statue at the NME Awards, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination for his most well-received effort in years, Wake Up the Nation. It’s that particular record that makes up the bulk of the set list on Find the Torch, Burn the Plans, Weller’s fifth official live album, which features 12 tracks cherry-picked from his five-night sold-out tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall, alongside six songs specially recorded at the Radio 2 Theatre for the station’s In Concert strand. Indeed, eight tracks appear from his eclectic and reenergized return to form, including a funky take of “Aim High,” an urgent rendition of acid rock opener “Moonshine,” and a blistering performance of “Fast Car/Slow Traffic” that recalls the strident new wave punk of the Jam’s late-’70s heyday. But while Weller has sometimes previously shied away from his mod revival past, here he appears to embrace it actively, as not only does former bandmate Bruce Foxton turn up on bass duties, but there are also four tracks originally recorded by the Jam, including number one single “Start” and signature tune “That’s Entertainment.” While his Style Council days are ignored, the rest of his eventful 18-year solo career is represented by a smattering of tracks, from his 1992 self-titled debut (“Into Tomorrow”) to 1995 commercial peak Stanley Road (“Broken Stones”) to 2008′s star-studded 22 Dreams (“Sea Spray”), while guest appearances from Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones on a turbocharged duet of “Eton Rifles,” U.S. soul vocalist Lauren Pritchard on a cover version of Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” and singer/songwriter Richard Hawley on Weller’s last Top 40 single, “No Tears to Cry,” show just how highly regarded he is by his fellow musicians. Find the Torch, Burn the Plans is the sound of an artist who, at 51 years old, appears to be in the prime of his career and having the time of his life in the process. Cannell-produced superhero parody Greatest American Hero began its two-year network run with this two-hour pilot film on March 18, 1981. William Katt stars as Ralph Hinkley, a mild-mannered schoolteacher who happens to be in the proximity of an alien spaceship landing. Also witnessing the event is G-man Bill Maxwell, played by Robert Culp. The aliens entrust Hinkley with a magic flying suit, instructing him to use this wonderful garment as a means of fighting evil. Alas, Hinkley loses the user’s manual for the suit almost immediately, which puts a crimp in Maxwell’s plans to thwart an assassination. Connie Sellecca co-stars as Ralph’s lady friend Pamela Davidson.
